How is my degree structured?

In your first year, there are two types of modules that can appear on a Lancaster undergraduate programme:

  • Core modules – these are modules that all students on a programme will take. Students will be automatically enrolled on core modules.
  • Optional modules – programmes may also contain some optional modules that you will be invited to choose. These may be from your department or, in some cases, could be modules from another department that you are allowed to take.

The first year of an undergraduate degree doesn’t count towards your final degree result, but in most programmes, you do have to pass all of your modules to progress to the next year.

For those students beginning a foundation year, please contact your department for details about your programme structure.

What modules will I study in my first year?

In the first year of an undergraduate degree, all students take modules totalling 120 credits. You can find more information about your programme and planned modules on the course pages – just go to your programme and visit the ‘course structure’ section. If your programme includes optional modules, you will make choices online before you arrive as part of the Registration process.

Are there any restrictions on the modules I can choose?

There may be restrictions such as limits on the number of places available on certain modules. If you choose a module that isn't available to you for any reason, staff can advise you on selecting an alternative.

Is it possible to change my module or programme after it has begun?

You can make changes to the optional modules within your programme you have chosen within two weeks of the start of the academic term, provided space is available and your timetable allows it.

You may be able to change your programme before the third week of the first term, and before you have missed too much tuition to make the change. However, it cannot be guaranteed that this is possible for all programmes.
